Mark 10:46-52
Mark 10:46-52
This morning I'll be reading Mark chapter 10 verses 46 through 52.
And I'll be reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
Mark 10:46-52
Jesus is continuing His journey to Jerusalem,,, and of course,,, His death on the cross,,, His death that He never deserved because He was sinless,,, but He died for our sins,,, to take our place,,, because “we” deserved death instead of Jesus.
Mark 10:46–52 (HCSB)
46 They came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!” 48 Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all the more, “Have mercy on me, Son of David!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up; He’s calling for you.” 50 He threw off his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” “Rabbouni,” the blind man told Him, “I want to see!” 52 “Go your way,” Jesus told him. “Your faith has healed you.”Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road.
God bless the reading and the hearing of your word this morning.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord,,, as we begin this morning,,, with everyone here today and all that are listening and watching by video,,, we ask that you open our ears to hear and our hearts and minds to receive the message that you have for us today,,, In Jesus' name I pray,,, Amen.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The last Sunday that I was here we looked at Mark 10:2-16 and we seen where “God’s Love” is what helps us in our every day walk with God.
We know that God had a better way,,, but we messed that up through sin in the Garden of Eden and we must deal with the problems that we have caused from that.
And it’s only through “God’s Love” that is available to us that allows us to grow in our relationship with Him since we’ve proven that we couldn’t do it on our own.
This morning we will look at these verses in Mark and see how they will help us in our walk with God this week.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 46 says: 46 They came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.
As I said at the beginning,,, Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem,,, and they have made it to Jericho.
But when they are leaving,,, He passes by Bartimaeus sitting on the side of the road.
Bartimaeus is positioned so that he can hopefully get money from those passing by.
We aren’t told how much Bartimaeus knew about Jesus or what he had heard,,, but it must have been enough to make him cry out to Jesus as He went by.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 47 says: 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!”
My Bible Knowledge Commentary says that the author of Mark was the first writer to use the title,,, “Son of David” in his writing about Jesus.
Bartimaeus’ using that title probably indicated that despite his physical blindness he believed Jesus of Nazareth was Israel’s Messiah,,, which is in sharp contrast with the blind unbelief of a lot of Jews,,, and the religious leaders during that time.
My Believer’s Bible Commentary says,,, It was ironical that while the nation of Israel was blind to the presence of the Messiah,,, a blind Jew had true spiritual sight!
Also notice that Jesus did not silence Bartimaeus,,, implying that He accepted that title.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 48 says: 48 Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all the more, “Have mercy on me, Son of David!”
He must have been very loud,,, and possibly obnoxious as he was crying out,,, but he was desperate to get Jesus’ attention,,, so he does whatever it takes to do just that.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 49 and 50 say: 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up; He’s calling for you.” 50 He threw off his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
Even while Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem,,, He takes the time to stop and see what Bartimaeus wants.
He still took the time to serve someone in need.
Jesus didn’t ignore Bartimaeus,,, instead telling them to “call him”.
Possibly a rebuke to those around Him,,, maybe even the disciples.
Then the people began to encourage Bartimaeus,,, which motivated him to throw off his outer cloak,,, which was spread out beside him to collect the money given to him,,, to jump up and go to Jesus.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 51 says: 51 Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” “Rabbouni,” the blind man told Him, “I want to see!”
Jesus’ question wasn’t given to get information from Bartimaeus,,, but was possibly given to encourage him to speak his need and express his faith.
This is something that we are required to do as well when we come to Jesus.
We must acknowledge our need for Jesus Christ to be our Savior.
We can’t just sit on the side of the road and voice our opinion,,, we must get up and take them to Jesus ourselves,,, no one can do it for us,,, we must make that decision and act upon it just as Bartimaeus does.
There is also something else interesting about the question that Jesus ask Bartimaeus as he comes forward.
If you remember just before this encounter,,, in this same chapter,,, in verses 35 through 45,,, James and John have approached Jesus privately to question Him about sitting at His right and left hand when He comes into His kingdom,,, and in that encounter,,, Jesus asks them this same question,,, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
And by doing so James and John come across as being self serving,,, thinking of themselves before others,,, but so is the request from Bartimaeus.
Sure,,, he is blind and that means that it doesn’t seem as bad,,, but the truth remains,,, that it’s still personal.
The difference between the two interactions with Jesus is a life and death difference for Bartimaeus,,, which I will explain in more detail after we look at the next verse.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 52 says: 52 “Go your way,” Jesus told him. “Your faith has healed you.” Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road.
Bartimaeus’ faith was key in Jesus’ healing him,,, and his specific request brought about a specific answer,,, and that should help us to understand that when we pray about something that is really important,,, we need to be specific.
Don’t beat around the bush,,, but come right out and tell God whatever your specific need is!
God already knows,,, true,,, but,,, He wants us to voice that need,,, as well.
--------------------
Now,,, notice the way that this verse end.
Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road.
Bartimaeus can see,,, sure,,, that’s great news,,, but it’s the rest of that sentence that means the world to me,,, and I believe,,, Bartimaeus as well.
It’s also the ending that I think ties into the discussion that James and John had with Jesus earlier that I said I would try to explain in greater detail.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The ending of this verse leads us to understand that Bartimaeus immediately begins to follow Jesus,,, possibly as one of His disciples.
And following Jesus is always the best decision that we can make for ourselves while we are here on earth,,, but the consequences that they have for our eternity are impossible for us to describe,,, but that’s the most important decision,,, and the best one that we can ever make.
--------------------
Now,,, going back to my explanation of Jesus' question to Bartimaeus' request and James and John's request,,,
Bartimaeus made his request and while it was made selfishly,,, or maybe I should say,,, for his sake,,, it was a different type of request than James and John had in mind when they asked Jesus their question.
They were both personal questions,,, and in both instances Jesus asked each of them the same question,,, “What do you want Me to do for you?” ,,, but,,, Bartimaeus’ question was asked because of something that he had,,, that the other two didn’t have.
Bartimaeus asked “because” of his faith.
James and John weren’t sure how Jesus would react to their question,,, but Bartimaeus knew that if he could get Jesus’ attention,,, he would be healed,,, he would be able to see.
James and John didn’t have this assurance because they weren’t asking for the right reasons.
But Bartimaeus got his sight,,, even though he could see more than many that day,,, even before he was healed.
But he received his sight,,, through faith,,, in Jesus Christ.
-----------------------------------------------------------
One more thing I want to bring to your attention,,, remember,,, Jesus never returned to Jericho before His death and resurrection.
This was an opportunity that Bartimaeus almost missed.
If he hadn’t been persistent in doing everything that he could to get Jesus’ attention,,, he would have missed such a wonderful experience.
Not to mention the life changing experience that he is still experiencing today in heaven with Jesus.
Something that is available to each one of us,,, and one that is too important to put off for another day,,, because just as it was for Bartimaeus that day,,, “Today Is the Day” to make the most important decision that will define how you spend eternity,,, whether it's heaven or hell,,, the choice is yours to make.
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you have never made the commitment to allow Jesus to be your Personal Savior,,, please make that decision today.
We aren't promised tomorrow,,, so the choice must be made today.
We don't know the hour or the day when Jesus comes back nor do we know if we will be called home,,, we are just told to be ready.
And to be ready,,, you must have made the decision to follow Jesus,,, be sure that you have made that decision today!
-----------------------------------------------------------
So as we sing our final hymn,,, let me remind you that the alter is always open,,,
If you feel God speaking to you,,, don't hesitate to come,,, maybe you just have questions,,, God will answer,,, you just have to ask Him,,, whatever the need may be,,,
As we sing the final hymn,,, come if needed!
